Honestly i am dying to delete all social media, at this point its taking energy instead of giving. But i feel anxiety thinking about the fact that all my friends are on social media. What if I become an outsider or miss invitations? Those would be the only reason keeping it. I truly hope social media loses its power in our world and we go back to a simpler more authentic way of living. Reading everybody their experiences does give me motivation to delete it all.

What if we didn’t have to compare ourselves to others based on how we look👀? That’s where voco comes in—a safe space to share your thoughts with people who value you for who you are, not what you look like🖤

Agreed with most of it. But, if social media is a drug, which I agree is, then setting boundaries and practicing safe social might be successful temporarily, but that mental issue will still be there and it will eventually get you back to where you started. Abstinence is the only way to beat it, as with any other drugs.

There was a time in my life when I got very depressed. I was looking for validation from my father. When he approved of me I felt like I was on the top of the world. When he wouldn’t I felt like ending my life. One one such day I was meditating. I needed to know what was wrong with me. I discovered something powerful in the meditation…this is what I learned. Anytime you are seeking the approval from anyone or anything outside of you it is a guarantee you will be on a violent vicious emotional rollercoaster ride. So, I took my power back I now self validate and the truly saved my life. I hope this helps someone! Have an amazing day you are awesome!!!!

This talk was very interesting and gave a lot of insight on the importance of mental health and the negative effects social media has on the younger generation. Within the many comments on this post lies the 7 Church’s 7 keys to Media. The first key is balance which is incredibly important to live a virtuous life. Not only does a person need balance in food, exercise, and other pleasures that bring individuals happiness but there is a need for balance in the usage of social media. We are seeing the negative effects of an excess use of social media through the rise of depression and anxiety in the younger generation today. The second key is attitude awareness which is extremely important to reflect on why a person is using social media and how they feel after. Most people use social media as a distraction, mindless activity and in many cases it’s shown that they feel worse after with this lingering feeling of emptiness. Moving forward and recognizing that could help many people with their anxiety and depression to shut off their phone which will lessen the constant self comparison to others and the sad feeling of fomo. The third media key is Dignity of the Human Person. Most of the content that influencers post is not real, which can create this facade in society causing the younger generation to want to attain this perfect lifestyle displayed online that doesn’t even exist. This is cliche but acknowledging that everyone is distinct from one another is beneficial to letting go of some of that anxiety caused from wanting to fit in to the most popular trends. The fourth key is based around truth. Again relating to the third one, not everything you see on the internet is the truth- that is pretty common knowledge. Understanding and practicing changing the mentality of believing everything an individual sees is incredibly hard. Try to look for the truth in the media, instead of just taking the first thing that pops up as a fact. An individual might have to dive deeper than they are used to to find the truth but it is so much more rewarding than believing in the empty words scattered across the internet. The fifth media key is inspiration. There are great stories shared on social media and once an individual finds the truth it is so heartwarming to hear about the beautiful stories of good Samaritans or a breakthrough in medical studies or simply cool interesting facts like scientists discovering that Pluto has ice volcanoes for example! The sixth media key is skillful development. Social media can also be beneficial in learning new trades. For example I follow this tik tok creator who teaches you ways to be sustainable in cooking and using everything in your fridge before you have to buy more food. As a broke college student, that is very useful to learn! The last meda key is experience and through listening to podcasts or ted talks individuals have the ability to become experienced in many different things they are interested in because the information is much more accessible now than it was before the rise of social media.

I think we should still examine how long we use social media. All good suggestions but also time of use is important. I notice I feel far better in my life and about myself when I set limits to how much I’ll consume in a day. I haven’t mastered it at all, but I think I’m going to start using timers and only watch three three talks on YouTube etc at a time and then break away. Best of luck everyone!
