ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM – Encyclopedia of UNCG History

A concentration in Ecological Research studies was produced in 1971 in the B.A. in Location provided by the Department of Location. In 1974, the name of the concentration altered from “Ecological Research studies” to “Earth Science/Environmental Researches.” The concentration stayed in Location till 2019, when it was relabelled “Earth Science.”

An interdisciplinary Ecological Research studies Program within the College of Arts and Sciences produced a small in “Ecological Research studies” in 2000, and in 2007 an “Ecological Research studies” significant was included as a concentration in Unique Programs in Liberal Research Studies (SPLS). The Ecological Research studies Program was relabelled the Ecological and Sustainability Research Studies Program in 2014, and it provided a brand-new small in “Sustainability Research studies” and, in 2017, significant concentrations in “Sustainability Research studies” and in “Environmental & & Sustainability Researches” along with the existing “Environmental Researches” track.

In 2018, the Environmental & & Sustainability Researches Program combined with the Department of Location to end up being the Department of Location, Environment, and Sustainability. The Program continues as the Environment & & Sustainability Program. In 2020, the SPLS degree was retired and all trainees changed to a brand-new B.A. in Environment & & Sustainability, selecting tracks in either “Natural Sciences” (previously “Environmental Researches”) or “Equity, Advancement, and Principles” (previously “Sustainability Research studies”). The minors were relabelled “Environment” and “Sustainability.” Likewise in 2020, the Program started using an online M.S. in Sustainability & & Environment; quickly afterwards, the Program included a variety of Post Baccalaureate Certificates (P.B.C.s). All of the undergraduate and graduate curricula incorporate viewpoints of the lives sciences, social sciences, and arts and liberal arts through UNCG’s distinct meaning of sustainability (embraced in the 2009-14 Strategic Strategy): “Academics, operations, and outreach are performed with mindful attention to the long-lasting interconnectedness of social equity, the environment, the economy, and looks.”
