Welcome back to our new Awkward Area Series! This is the 2nd episode as well as we are dealing with the much distressing lengthy as well as slim location. In this video clip I will certainly be sharing solutions for slim as well as lengthy locations in:

Can you do an awkward rectangular bedroom? It’s like 11 x 12 but it has a window nook and the closet sisters of being the length of one wall is a square and bulges out for another weird angle
Julie Khuu
What’s your specific question? I will try to address it in another video 👍🏻☺️
i . Storm
@Julie Khuu so I have a queen bed, 1 nightstand, 1 dresser with mirror, 1 chest. A tall bookshelf with 5 shelves, a 50 inch by 30 work desk and an office chair
i . Storm
I’m trying to figure out how to arrange the furniture. So far I have the bed on the long wall lined up with long side of bed, nightstand sideways next to bed (bc again room shape has nook window etc) bookshelf across bed foot side. 2 dressers on other long side of room. Workdesk takes up space under window, between foot board and bookshelf

@Julie Khuu I’ll try to draw a picture and post it, I know my description isn’t the best

Hi Julie I love your ideas…..My dilima is that my den is off the kitchen which is the entryway into den and kitchen vice versa. I have a sofa on the long wall and a TV on the shorter wall with built in entertainment center that holds TV and what knots. I placed two chairs on the entry walll leading into den and kitchen vice versa that swivil. However behind the sofa I have picture of women in church in a gold frame. I would like to place a picture behind the two swivil chairs but dont have any idea as to what to place there. Any suggestions…… is greatly appreciated. Love your work and keep the great ideas coming. Thanks

Just inherited a house. Built 1912 so nothing like the easy design issue in an open plan home typically and easily solved by an afternoon trip to some new home models. We have 1/3 of the room in front of the front door, A center fireplace on the long inside wall, the outside wall with the door has original picture window flanked by narrower ones. 1 1/2 feet to the side of the fireplace across from the windows is a large opening to the dining room. The room is 30-35 feet wide by 15-16 feet deep. It stretches all the way across the front of the house. Furniture layout which I’m good at for that room is a pain. Being marrow a tv above the fireplace is difficult, so it’s down on a narrower wall on a buffet under a narrow but wide window. From moving the fireplace to ditching the tv which is a no go as I don’t like them in my bedroom. I prefer a screen fee space. Thoughts?
Julie Khuu
If that narrow wide window doesn’t have a view you need, I would drape the back of it from floor to ceiling and create a focal point for the TV David. That will help fill up the wall while allowing light to filter through

My long and awkward room has two exits, entrance to another sitting area also it has my kitchen door and a window counter from the kitchen. I don’t know how to decorate the space. Please help.
Julie Khuu
Subtract the clearance needed for passage and that’s the footprint you have to work with Andre. Check out my video on how to maximize your living room layout for more tips on how to work your space
Jerri Dorr
I have small and narrow
Julie Khuu
Just measure the depth of furniture to make sure you have clearance for passage Jerri
Jane Austen TV
Another brilliant video Julie! I’ll be putting your suggestions into action. Thank you so much❤
Julie Khuu
Awesome 🙌🏻 Thank you for watching Jane 🙏🏻☺️
It Gets Better
I think this video confirms I have the most awkward living room. It’s long and narrow with multiple entries and a fireplace in the middle. There’s only two walls.
Julie Khuu
It’s all about the scale of your furniture to make sure this space works Nikki. Subtract the room needed for passage (36” min) and the rest is what you have to play with
Sarah Smith
These arent long and narrow they’re vast. Long and narrow is problematic these spaces don’t have any of the problems of a long narrow space. In living rooms we traditionally want a circular formation for conversation or arranged around a focal point, this is not possible in a long narrow space.
Julie Khuu
Check out my video for creating focal points in the living room for more tips Sarah!
Malaika
This was a great episode. It really helped me to put into perspective the challenges of my space. Thank you. I have a 13×13 ft living room space with very high ceilings. The focus point in the fireplace with to long vertical windows on each side. Any suggestions for the design challenge?
Julie Khuu
Depends on the height of the ceiling, but I would use drapery to dictate what happens with the fireplace. You may opt to finish the fireplace with a natural stone that goes all the way up to the ceiling or a beautiful surround that keeps the eyes drawn down to the seating group. You’re the designer Malaika, you determine how you want the space to look and feel
Allie M
Do you have a video on how to place furniture when you have awkward angled walls? I would love to take a video of my main floor and pick your brain
Julie Khuu
Yes I do Allie- it’s in this awkward space series called sloped ceilings and slanted walls ☺️

Very helpful video, thanks.👍🏼🙌🏼🫂🥰

Fialisa isn’t in my ikea. My ikea has the inner and the FJÄDRAR. Does anyone know if FJÄDRAR is the same as fialisa?
Julie Khuu
Not sure about this one- those names all have me confused 😅
ann b
Could you make a video where it’s long and narrow with several entrances into the living room?
Also could you make it actually narrow?
The examples you showed were not narrow by my standards. 😊
Julie Khuu
But you can still implement the tips Ann. You must understand the minimum clearance for passages (36”) and design accordingly. Watch the video on how to measure your space for furniture for more tips! 👍🏻☺️
Nelson Kaiowá
Very helpful.
Julie Khuu
Thank you for watching Nelson! 🙏🏻☺️
Alma Balisi
Hi Julie, new subscriber here. I’ve watched this video but still struggling with the furniture placements. My living room size is 22′ x 14′. The fireplace/mounted tv are in the middle. Left side of the fireplace is a double door going to the backyard. There are 2 big and narrow windows on both side of the wall where an upright piano sits in the middle. Right side of the fireplace is a huge window and solid wall. Could you kindly advise the best furniture placement for my living room please? I would like a sectional but not sure where to place it best. Also, the opening to the living room is from the kitchen that has 113″ opening with island in the middle. Thank you Julie in advance for your advise and all the best with your channel😉
Julie Khuu
Thank you for watching Alma! The sectional should open into the room, king side facing your focal point which is the fireplace and TV. Watch my video on maximizing your living room layout for more space planning tips and the video on best sectionals for measuring tips!
Alma Balisi
Thank you, Julie for your reply and guidance. Much appreciated😊👍
Alma Balisi
Hi Julie, just a follow up question, please. Will it be too big for a 122″ x 93″ sectional to be put in the middle of the living room facing the fireplace? If yes, what will be the ideal size then? Thanks again for your reply in advance. Have a great day!
