It’s important to remove limescale as soon as you notice it because if left untreated it will cause water to be pushed through slowly and could even cause burst or leaky pipes.

How to Prevent its Build-Up

I’m sure that if you’ve ever had to deal with limescale, you know how frustrating it can be.

Lime scale is a mineral deposit found on the inner surface of pipes, boilers, tanks, and other containers. It is mainly caused by the presence of calcium ions in water that come in contact with hot surfaces.

There are several ways to prevent limescale build-up in your home:

1) Flush your pipes before using them

2) Avoid boiling water for too long

3) Use vinegar when washing dishes

Cleaners that get rid of lime scale

Limescale is made up of hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium. These two elements form a crystal-like coating on the inside of the pipes. The more water passes through those pipes, the more limescale will build up on them. That’s why it is recommended to clean your sink regularly to prevent it from reaching that stage and creating more problems for you later on.

The first step in getting rid of lime scale is removing as much as possible with a scrubbing sponge or brush and some dish soap, baking soda, or lemon juice. After that, you should use a mixture of vinegar and water to dissolve the minerals so they can be washed away easily. However, if there are still residues left after using these remedies, you might have to do some scrubbing again.

Over time, this can harden and make surfaces like taps, wash basins and showerheads harder to clean. Removing it can be difficult, but fortunately there are some natural remedies at home that you can use to get rid of limescale.

  1. Lemon juice: One of the most popular remedies for removing limescale at home is lemon juice! The acidity in lemon juice breaks down the limescale and it’s easy to rinse away. Simply rub some lemon juice on your wash basin or showerhead with a cloth or sponge, leave for 15 minutes and then rinse off with water!
  2. Vinegar: Vinegar is a good natural cleaner and it can remove limescale deposits off glass and tiles too. You can either mix vinegar with water or dilute it by using 50% vinegar to 50% water solution. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray it on the affected area. Wait for few minutes before wiping it off with a cloth or scrubbing it off with a brush. The smell of vinegar will be strong but after rinsing, there should be no smell left behind.
  3. Baking soda: Baking soda is an excellent natural powerful cleaning agent. To eliminate limescale from your home, mix baking soda with water to form a paste. Then simply apply the paste to the area that needs cleaning and scrub gently with a damp cloth or sponge.
