Thanks for watching and commenting. So I bought the boards at Home Depot where they had 24 inch s4s poplar boards. The short boards are usually flat and straight but I selected the best ones. I did joint them on the table saw, even though they were straight.

They are called tenons and in this case they are floating tenons. I made them out of scrap wood myself but didn’t show that in the video

I have actually stopped using my router to slot the stiles and rails. I have found the process to be faster and just as clean using only my table saw. In addition, I’ve been making the loose tenons (not loose after glue of course) because it’s faster, easier, and just as strong. Plus, the rails can be cut to width without needing to calculate for the built in tenons.

I’m working on my first ever shaker cabinet doors and have been struggling with built-in tenons. I’ve tried using a DIY tenoning jig with dado stack on the table saw, and built a router table to try a tenoning router bit. The common factor that’s making it all so difficult is the inconsistencies in thickness of off-the-shelf trim, and getting clean crosscut tenon cuts. Some joints end up too loose, some too tight. Also, too much fraying and blowout. Maybe that’s common with poplar? Or that I’m not using top-of-the-line cutting tools. But too much wasted wood and time. Anyway, as I don’t have a thickness planer I’m giving up on built-in tenons for loose ones. I can get a really clean mortise with the dado stack and if I mark tops of all the boards as I cut them the thickness inconsistencies won’t matter. Thank you. This video is just what I needed! I made a bunch of doors using half lap joints (difficult), then switched halfway thru the project to butt joints with pocket screws (ugly). But this method is brilliant! You basically have butt joints that are reinforced by the floating tenon. I can’t wait to try this out myself! 👍😂
