Queensland to roll out 1.5 MWh fleet of neighbourhood batteries

Electrical energy supplier Energex will set up a combined 1.5 MWh fleet of area battery energy storage systems throughout the Queensland city of Ipswich to take in excess solar and pump low-cost renewables back into the grid throughout peak durations.

The batteries, to be provided by Queensland-based tidy tech start-up EcoJoule Energy and Norwegian maker Pixii, will consist of 30 power pole-mounted and 5 ground-level systems.

The batteries will take in the comparable solar from roughly 600 roof PV systems throughout the day and will release that tidy electrical power throughout peak durations. It is anticipated the batteries will have a combined 3 to 4 hours of storage capability.

The state federal government stated the rollout will begin in the Ipswich suburban areas of Goodna, Booval and Redbank Plains, with the very first of the area batteries to be set up in “coming weeks”.

Energex will set up, own and preserve the batteries, while they will be run by Origin in the wholesale energy market.

Origin’s Executive General Supervisor of Future Energy, Anthony Lucas, stated the merchant’s function in the task will be to check out various methods to produce and share the advantages of area batteries with consumers.

” The advancement of wise, linked, low-carbon options like area batteries are main to Origin’s aspiration to lead the energy shift through cleaner energy and client options,” he stated.

The area batteries effort becomes part of the Queensland federal government’s Energy and Jobs Strategy, that includes $500 million to buy more massive and neighborhood batteries.

” This will support implementation of network batteries of various scales to offer extra energy storage to keep excess roof solar and enhance network strength,” Deputy Premier Steven Miles stated.

The federal government stated the area batteries will match the massive network-connected neighborhood batteries being presented throughout the network in local Queensland as part of a neighborhood battery trial.

The state federal government has strategies to set up a minimum of 5 massive, network-connected batteries with an integrated capability of 40 MWh. The batteries are to be set up at substations in Townsville, Yeppoon, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Toowoomba.
